Calisthenics and

BodyWeight Training

Calisthenics is a form of physical training consisting of a variety of exercises that generally require no equipment or apparatus.

The word calisthenics comes from the ancient Greek “Kallos” which means beauty, and “sthenos” which means strength. It is often thought of as the ART of using your own bodyweight and qualities of inertia as a means to develop your physique and movement ability.

Calisthenics aim to increase strength and flexibility with movements such as bending, jumping, swinging, twisting, kicking and using ones own body for resistance.

At Origin our calisthenics programs are focused on progressions and pathways as we strive to achieve pinnacle movements, such as the planche, handstand, Front Lever, Pistol Squat and Muscle up.

These movements then open the door to more difficult variations as well as movement flows. These flows are combinations of strength and movement exercises which can present as a moving meditation  or movement expression similar to a dance.

Calisthenics is an amazing way to improve movement ability but also the overall look and condition of your physique. By manipulating time under tension, range of motion, leverage, flexibility and balance, we can demand more from our workouts

An important note is that Calisthenics improves strength relative to the practitioner and will lead to better control and stability when compared to most traditional weight lifting methods.

Combined with our ground based training, Animal flow, we are able to guide you down the path to moves you never thought imaginable and a physique you never thought was possible.

We regularly assess and measure our progress with timed holds, as well as photographic and video recording.

The basic hierarchy of a calisthenic routine would look like:

  • Warm up and Mobility

  • Skill or technique Work (handstands, flows, technique movements)

  • Power, Isometrics, Eccentrics and Strength Work

  • Endurance, Metabolic Conditioning, Interval training

  • Flexibility work, Bulletproofing and cool downs.
